ABOUT MASTERSINGERS YOUTH

The Mid-Columbia Boys Choir for boys with unchanged voices in 4th-7th grade was launched in 2014. Now in its 4th season and consisting of 30 singers, the Boys Choir has performed throughout our community, most notably with the Mid-Columbia Ballet, the Mid-Columbia Symphony, the Mid-Columbia Youth Symphony, at Dust Devils games, at Martin Luther King, Jr. children's events, and many others. The success of this choir, along with rising demands for a girls' choir and choirs for older youth, has inspired the creation of Mastersingers Youth, a more complete program of youth choirs. Four distinct choirs serving boys, girls, young men, and young women will allow our directors to focus on the unique needs of each group, providing much-needed support and education, and encouraging our youth to perform exceptional music in our community. We hope that this is just the beginning of a thriving youth choir program that will see benefits to hundreds of youth in southeastern Washington.

Mastersingers Youth Choirs will have the opportunity to perform in an array of venues and with several local and regional distinguished musical groups, including other choirs, symphonies, ballet and theater groups, and of course, with the Mid-Columbia Mastersingers adult choir groups.

BENEFITS OF SINGING IN A COMMUNITY YOUTH CHOIR

Participation in choir has numerous benefits for individuals and the entire community. At any age, singing in choir decreases levels of stress, anxiety and depression. For youth, the benefits are not only physical, but social and academic as well. Students who sing in choir outperform non-arts peers on the SATs and show a 20 percent increase in test scores in both language and math. Studying music helps improve spatial reasoning skills, which are necessary for success in advanced mathematics. Students who sing in choir are more empathetic towards their peers, community, and other cultures. By singing in choir, students learn to analyze problems, and to solve them in collaboration with colleagues to achieve a common goal. The result of their effort and commitment is a sense of pride, self-esteem, and self-confidence.

"Choir is much more than a musical experience or performance. It is an emotonal bonding that individuals will always call on in tmes of joy, sorrow, celebraton, pain, or healing. I whole-heartedly believe that lives are forever changed by choral music and that is why I give so much of my life to music." -JoLyn Glenn, Young Women's Choir Director

"Since joining the boys' choir, my son is more focused at school, more respectful, more disciplined and attentive, but also more open and emotionally involved in our family life." -Boys' Choir parent
